Description
Known primarily as an illustrator, Hans Alexander Mueller was nevertheless an apt student of capturing everyday imagery in deft, elegant compositions. In this untitled woodcut, a group of small fishing boats is gathered in the middle of a low canal or marsh at the edge of a town, the day overcast and moody. Old trees are bent from time, and the clouds are washed through with wind, appearing to rise in the middle like a curtain drawing upward to allow the glow of the early morning sun through. Mueller expertly renders the complex patterns on the surface of the water and portrays the daily lives of fishermen, on whose craft the town no doubt relies, with quiet dignity.
