WHAT ARE FINE PRINTS?
Fine prints are original works of art. They are images that have been conceived by an artist and drawn onto a matrix (a woodblock, a metal plate, a stone, a screen, etc.), then by various processes are incised into that matrix. These are then inked and hand-printed by the artists themselves or in close collaboration with a Master printer onto paper, using a printing press, a baren, or a screen. Unlike gicleés, which replicate - not create - an original piece of art, fine prints always retain the human element. Below are several informative links to give you an idea of what goes into making a variety of fine prints.

CATALOGUE RAISONNÉS
Links to the complete or near-complete, professionally compiled lists of individual artists' printed works, as well as the catalogues of major print workshops. These are often compiled by academics, but occasionally are put together by dealers who represent an artist's estate or otherwise have access to their works in order to catalog them. They often take years to complete.
