Description
A depiction of the Montelbaanstoren tower in Amsterdam situated on the Oudeschans canal, fishing boats docked in the foreground. Built as part of a defensive wall in 1516, the tower was later slated to become part of the Duke of Alba's castle (ca. 1567), a plan that never came to fruition but nonetheless sparked the local name of Monte Albano Toren (Mont Alban Tower). This name eventually morphed into a combination of dialects to create the word "Montelbaanstoren."
