Description
French mezzotint printmaker Michel Estebe depicts the view southward from Waddel Creek Beach in Davenport, Santa Cruz County, California. A part of Big Bason Redwoods State Park, the wide, flat beach marks the only part of the federally protected park that meets the ocean, where Waddel Creek emerges from the redwood forest to make its way to the shoreline. Estebe's composition is nearly photographic, and he has added marks like registration points at the halfway point of each edge, as if to suggest a camera lens. Rather than using blue for the sky, he's chosen a honeyed yellow, creating an unusual atmosphere that suggests sunlight filtering through fog - not unusual for the California coastline.
