Danielle Desplan often creates works in small formats, offering glimpses into imaginary worlds. Having trained at the Sorbonne and Ecole des Beaux-Arts in the late 1970s, she would likely have found inspiration in European Abstract Expressionism and the works of such printmakers as Johnny Friedlander and Joan Miro.
Here, she presents two figures rendered in sparse lines suspended in a strange but luminous landscape, their bodies surrounded by symbols of connection. “Fiancees”, created on a matrix that barely measures 3” by 2”, is quietly charming.
