Description

Known primarily as an illustrator, Hans Alexander Mueller was nevertheless an apt student of capturing everyday imagery in deft, elegant compositions. In this untitled woodcut, a group of small fishing boats is gathered in the middle of a low canal or marsh at the edge of a town, the day overcast and moody. Old trees are bent from time, the clouds are washed through with wind, and a distant horizon glows with the sun of the early morning. Mueller expertly renders the complex patterns on the surface of the water and portrays the daily lives of fishermen, on whose craft the town no doubt relies, with quiet dignity.
