Description

John Whessell was an accomplished engraver who worked in Oxford, England creating stipple engravings after other painters. He was best known for his animal subjects, especially horses. This engraving is done after one of George Morland's compositions, a sty full of swine, relaxing in the sun. Morland's signature is engraved within the image and the lower center.

There is printed text in the margin at the lower left "J Whessell Sculpt 1798".

According to the text in the lower margin this print was published in 1798 by "Darling & Thompson Co., Newport Street, and T. Simpson St. Pauls Church Yard." It has hand coloring.
