(Sunflowers) is an intaglio, a drypoint. The platemark measures 12-1/16 x 8-1/2 inches. It is annotated in pencil on the lower right margin, perhaps a signature, perhaps a title? This drypoint was printed on a sheet of ivory Van Gelder Zonen wove paper that measures 17-1/2 x 12-1/2 inches. The gallery reference number for this work is SDAE254.
My guess is that this was done sometime in the 1930s and might be German in origin. The drypoint lines are deep and leave a dark black burr which create the deep blacks in the composition, which reminds me of some drypoints by Lovis Corinth and some of the Expressionists. The flowers and the surround are created with a sure hand and swift, defined lines and whites that are the result of the color of the paper. We have a couple of other intaglios by this artist.
