Karl Hubenthal mocks Gerald Ford's famously messy administration reorganization, during which prominent holdovers of Nixon's post-impeachment cabinet, including Henry Kissinger and William Colby, were replaced with the members of Ford's cabinet after months of infighting. Known as the "Halloween Massacre," it took place on Tuesday, November 4, 1975.
Three days later this single panel comic appeared in the Los Angeles Herald Examiner. In it, Gerald Ford dons a pith helmet while crouched in in a "howdah," a type of East Indian woven carriage traditionally strapped to an elephant for carrying royalty or hunters. Here, the howdah has slipped down around the elephant's - or the Republican Party's - belly, though Ford doesn't seem to notice as he points between its legs and declares, "We will continue to move forward" while hanging upsidedown.
