An exemplary image by Robert Conover whose woodcuts - often quite large, as with "Autumn" - were known for their simplified, essential shapes and textures. Here, he depicts the tangled branches of a deciduous tree in brown and black, its bare limbs a signifier of the cold air through which it stretches. This motif works well in its oversized format, as it allows the viewer to feel more immersed in the tree's environment.
