Description
A sense of strength and quietude is often found in the work of Jack Jefferson. A noted Bay Area Abstract Expressionist who studied and taught at the California School of Fine Arts (which during his tenure became the San Francisco Art Intitute) he is among the students whose work is synonymous with the West Coast's contribution to the genre.
Jefferson uses aquatint to produce soft, layered tonality in this non-representational work. Done after his retirement from teaching, Jefferson had entered a period of prolific artistic exploration and frequently presented his works in suites, denoting a particular evolution of style. This work is the first image in "Nine Works: Number Suite, 1984 - 1992".
