Other impressions of this untitled work were printed by Collier in either dark blue-green ink or black ink, showing his aptitiude for expression of depth and texture using the open-bite technique. However, this unique, multi-color proof illustrates how the artist also used the same matrix to explore color values, creating an entirely different mood - liquid, firey - from its monochromatic siblings.
These works were printed Atelier 17 in Paris under the supervision of Stanley William Hayter. Prior to his time at the experimental workshop, much of Collier's work concentrated on the figurative, and in a manner reminiscent of German Expressionism. Later works would often synthesize these two styles.
