Hagman moved from the Pacific Northwest to Santa Monica, California and began a series of paintings that she would translate into color woodcut. She noted: “When I moved from Seattle to LA, I stopped along the roadside and painted what I saw. The sunshine on the ocean, a grocery store that looked like an example of Mexican modernist architecture, and people out walking in parks.” Ocean Avenue is a major boulevard in Santa Monica but with Ocean Avenue, Day, Hagman offers a tranquil, postcard snapshot of palm trees along a sandy beach and a calm and peaceful, Pacific Ocean.
