From a loose-leaf portfolio of fourteen lithographs accompanied by the poems of Pierre Reverdy (French: 1889 - 1960). Visages was published in 1946 in a total edition of 250, and each portfolio was signed by both the artist and poet on the colophon. Matisse and Reverdy were long time friends and collaboratrs, beginning when Reverdy offered Matisse his first illustration commission, for Reverdy's book Les Jockeys Camoulfes (1918).
