Ghost Ranch is a 21,000-acre retreat located near Abiquiu in north-central New Mexico, fifty miles north of Santa Fe. Abiquiu, where Georgia O’Keeffe built her home and studio, is located in Rio Arriba County. In his woodcut, O'Keeffe Country, Mortensen depicts the multihued cliffs, the high mesas, the unique land formations, the well-timbered Carson National Forest, and the vast grasslands that nourished O’Keeffe’s soul. In this composition, he captured waves of golden native grasses and blossoming salvias. Fed by seasonal monsoons, the flora on the desert floor softens the harsh landscape, connecting the dramatic, layered mesas with hues as varied as a sunset.
