A depiction of the wild irises found throughout the central and northern coast of California and southern Oregon, known as the Douglas Iris. They often grow low to the ground, especially those closest to the coast, surrounded by long, slender leaves. Mortensen's color reduction woodcut is an elegant, uncluttered image of one of the brightest blossoms to decorate the grasslands in spring.
