A simple stem of quince, with its vivid blossoms and round leaves, is deftly rendered in Chiura Obata's watercolor and sumi ink drawing, his natural instinct for capturing beauty with the simplest brushstrokes perfectly on display. Obata frequently used his wife Haruko's ikebana creations as his inspiration; in 1940, he illustrated her book on the subject, An Illustrated Handbook of Japanese Flower Arrangement.
