Description

We have not found another example of this tonalist image, apparently this is a proof. It is not listed in the Gravalos/Pulin catalogue raisonne nor on the on-line raisonne at Berth-lum.org. This impression is copyrighted in 1910 but Lum would vary the copyright date from print to print.

In 1905 Lum did a print titled "Road to the Forest" (at Nikko) where she depicted cottages at night surrounded by tall pine trees. After the war with Japan began she returned for a while to California. Because of the Japanese subject matter she had difficulty selling her work in America, so she changed the title of "Road to the Forest" to "Carmel Cottages". This tall, thin image of pines was consigned to the gallery as "Redwoods", but are more likely the tall Japanese pines and are stylistically similar.
