"The Jetty in England" was a reversal of the image of Buhot's "Landing in England" and went through 8 state changes in which the weather changes dramatically. It was done while on his second trip to England in 1879.
This impression is a proof from the 2nd state, which adds etching and roulette to the drypoint, with the two fish in the lower margin and the gulls in the sky, and is signed with the large red owl stamp beneath the platemark (Lugt 977). This impression of "Une Jetee en Angleterre" is rich with drypoint. It was originally purchased from dealer R.E. Lewis in the 1960s.
The 1983 Baltimore Museum exhibition catalog notes, on page 104: "That Buhot printed a number of proofs of each state as he progressed to a definitive state testifies to his belief that the intermediate stages of the creative process produce valid artistic statements."
