Description
A softly rendered image of a woman working in the garden of a cottage in Boulogne-sur-Mer, often referred to simply as Boulogne. Situated on the Cote d'Opale of Northern France, along the English channel, the scenic seaside town has long been one of the country's largest fishing ports. Cottages such as the one depicted in this image are typical of the region, though much of it was destroyed in the Second World War. Smillie captures a bucolic moment in late 19th century France and the inviting solitude of country life.
