Description
From Knesebeck catalogue: "Edition of circa 200 proofs, 1947, on various papers, on velim, imitation Japan and simple, machine-made paper. Some with the remark from Hans Kollwitz or with the embossed stamp "Kathe Kollwitz Nachlass Estate". This was Kollwitz's last self portrait, a large lithograph done in 1938 when she was 71 and two years after her work had been banned from being exhibited in Germany. Kollwitz printed a few proofs from the stone. The stone was rediscovered after the war. The stone had not been cancelled and the artist's son, Hans, authorized editions of 30, 160 and 250. This impression is an early proof from the first edition of about 30 impressions printed on a cream (chamoisfarben) velin paper, 26-1/2 x 19-1/2". Inscribed in pencil in the lower margin, in an unknown hand: "Selbstportrait im Profil nac rechts / (Das Letzte Selbstbildnis)" and "Prachvoller Probedruck / auf grossen zeichen Buttenpapier / Klip. 265 / 49.5 - 67 cm", loosely translated as "Beautiful Proof / on large drawing paper". There appears to be an erasure at the bottom of the paper that read: "Kathe Kollwitz Selbstportrait".
