Description

This lithograph was published by the California Works Progress Administration (WPA) Federal Art Project in an edition of around 25 impressions.

Jennie Lewis created a lithograph using a variety of patterned lines and shapes rather than shadows to create a "texture" for this cityscape. The dome of Temple Emanu-El is visible at the top of the composition. The temple is located at 2 Lake Street at Arguelo Boulevard in San Francisco.

Jennie Lewis, who had studied for a summer with William Merritt Chase in 1914 in Carmel, California did a series of interesting, Modernist lithographs of San Francisco for the Project in the late 1930s. Lewis died in a snow storm in the Sierras at age 52.
