Description
The Montgomery Block Building was the name given to what had been the Bank of Lucas, built after the Civil war under the supervision of William Tecumseh Sherman, by lodgers who took up residence there after the bank moved to Market Street in 1900. It became a popular place for bohemians and artists to live in the 1920s and 30s due to its affordability, and it was soon dubbed the "Monkey Building". In 1925 Bothwell opened the cooperative Modern Gallery on the second floor along with nine other artists. This is a view of her apartment.
