The Town of Nashville is one of twelve color woodcuts that Baumann produced for his portfolio, In the Hills o’ Brown. Impressions were printed by the artist over many years so color variations occurred. Martin Krause, Baumann scholar and curator emeritus of prints, drawings and photographs at the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, has stated that this is a view from Baumann’s rented cabin on Cheerful Hill, overlooking the town of Nashville. The building right of center with the tower might be mistakenly identified as a church but it was Nashville’s county courthouse.
