Description
This impression is used in the catalogue raisonne In a Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann to illustrate the first edition. In the notes on this print, Chamberlain quotes from Baumann on page 314 reads: "My first intrduction to an Artist's Colony was in Provincetown during the first was where the artists had settled for the duration...I often wonder what it is that should be more interesting to the artists, the picture of the painting he makes or the material he makes it of. Should he herd in colonies where subject matter is soon worn threadbare or should he stay in his studio, put his mind on the psychiatrist's couch, and make careful notes of what is revealed there."
