Description
This woodengraving was done after an oil painting done in 1902 by William Merritt Chase of Catherine Hansell French Earle (ref: Pisano/Baker OP365), wife of Geo. H. Earle, Pennsylvania businessman. Her son, George H. Earle III was governor of Pennsylvania through the Depression. The location of the painting is not known.
In 1915, the year before his death, the American wood engraver won the Grand Prize for his printmaking at the Panama Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco. The Wolf prints we have were available for sale at the PPIE and many were the actual prints exhibited and have the label from the PPIE.
