Description
After a section of the oil painting Baltasar Carlos by Valezquez. Done around 1640, the original was a full-length rendering of Baltasar Charles, Prince of Austria, heir-apparent to the Spanish monarchy before his untimely death at age seventeen of smallpox. From infancy to death he was a popular subject for court artists, especially Valezquez and his students.
In 1915, the year before his death, the American wood engraver Henry Wolf won the Grand Prize for his printmaking at the Panama Pacific International Exposition (PPIE) in San Francisco. The Wolf prints we have were available for sale at the PPIE and many were the actual prints exhibited and have the label from the PPIE.
