This small etching is by a printmamker who was obviously influenced by Whister's intaglios done in the late 19th century where he recorderd a number of ordinary shops found while exploring the streets of Paris, London, Amsterdam, and Venice. These quickly etched, simple compositions were a great influence on young printmakers internationally in so many ways.
This etching depicts the shop of 'Loudimou Fils, Brocanteur' an antique/vintage shop in France. The shop has their wares displayed outside and in the windows; coats on a rack, baby carriages, a wheelbarrow and a cart. A man emerges from a doorway and begins to walk behind a large wagon while child plays with a hoop and, at the right, a lady begins to cross the street. The whole tableau is accomplished using short, quickly drawin lines which cast no shadows or distract the viewer. The tone used for the street was accomplished by leaving a thin layer of ink when the plate was wiped.
