Ynez Johnston's 1958 five-color intaglio was ultimately published under the title "The Ivory Coast" by the International Graphic Arts Society (IGAS). However, it appears Johnston was using a working title, "The Bay of Naples," when she made this proof; another print under that title would be published around the same time.
This work is illustrated in black and white on the first page of the 1958 IGAS catalogue (Series no. 31, November). In the description of the work the artist Leonard Edmondson writes: "...Her special talent lies in her ability to combine the exotic and the intuitive into a personal iconography. This etching, accomplished with the rare drawing skill evident in all of her work, is characteristic of the best of her poetic imagery."
