A color stipple engraving, printed chine colle, after the painting by British artist Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). The engraving was published in both color and black and white editions by Pall Mall, London publisher Anthony Molteno.
Charles Knight was a London-born and -based printmaker and a noted miniature painter. He graduated from the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1788 and was one of the original governors of the Society of Engravers.
Lady Louisa Manners (nee Tollemache, 1745-1840) was the eldest daughter of Lionel, the 4th Earl of Dysart. She married John Manners of Hanby Hall in 1762 at the age of 17. On the death of her brother in 1821 she inherited the family title and became known as the Countess of Dysart. She was considered a great beauty and the portrait by Reynolds hangs at Kenwood House on the edge of Hampstead Heath in north London.
A note on condition: this work was professionally cleaned and the work retains its colors in all strength and subtlety. We have yet to locate another color impression of this work.
