Description
By the late 1950s John Saccaro was an established Bay Area Abstract Expressionist with work included in major exhibitions throughout the U.S., including a solo show at the M.H. de Young in San Francisco (1946), biennials at the Corcoran in Washington D.C. and in Sao Paolo, and the Pittsburgh International Exhibition of Contemporary Painting at the Carnegie Museum of Art (1955). He had developed a style he referred to as "sensory raids," defined by slashing, gestural linework, often executed in muted colors. These images, as seen here, may have been inspired by his time as a camoufleur during World War II.
