From the fifth edition of Abraham Bloemart's Tekenboek (Drawing Book), originally published in 1650-'55 and engraved by his son, Frederick. The title of this edition, which includes both Dutch and Latin script, is Original and renowned architectural drawing book by Abraham Bloemaert. The image - and, it's assumed, all images in the book - was printed in the reverse of the original.
The head of an ox accompanied by an artist's palette is representative of Saint Luke the Evangelist, Patron Saint of Artists (as well as physicians, public sinners, and more). Bloemaert cofounded the Ultrecht Guild of St. Luke (for painters) in 1611.
