Yoshimi Okamoto, born Ryusei Okamoto in 1949, has created several series of color woodcuts that deal with themes of seasons, young love, and Japanese mythology. Among these is the myth of the “White Fox” a series which highlights the kitsune, supernatural entities that can shapeshift from a white fox into a beautiful young woman. Depending on the region and era, the kitsune can be a symbol of protection and friendship, or of deceit.
Here, Okamoto portrays a young woman dressed in celebratory garb, celebrating the arrival of spring. On her head is a white fox mask, pushed aside to reveal her human face.
