Description

Two Mandarin ducks visit a pond in winter, the rocks and branches surrounding them draped in snow. Though he was known primarily as a traditional Japanese painter, Mataichiro was an accomplished woodcut artist whose style was influenced by the tonality of watercolor.

Here, he depicts a Mandarin duck couple, the male in his extravagant plumage offset by his pale-hued companion and the soft winter haze punctuated by falling snowflakes.
