Description
"Neutitschein" is the German spelling and pronunciation of Novy Ji?ín, a town located in eastern Czech Republic. The town is known for its hatting industry, hosting the world's oldest hat manufacturer in the world and earning its nickname as "the town of hats". In accordance with Czech law, the entire town is protected as an urban monument.
Here, Max Pollak depicts Masarykovo Square as seen through the archway of a stone arcade, with the Marian column to the left, the statue of St. Nicholas in the center, and the tower of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary seen in the background, right. As this was created before the World Wars, the square differs quite a bit from how it appears today.
