A minimalist, kinetic study in gouache, this unsigned composition may have been an exercise, or perhaps a preliminary "sketch" for a future screenprint. Unlike his earlier work, which usually featured fluid curves rendered in layered, tonal colors, Robertson strips this composition down to sharp, solidly-colored geometric elements, which remain self contained within a small white field. Despite the limited format, the shapes are pleasingly arranged, allowing the eye to drift from one to the other, top to bottom, allowing the viewer to formulate their own narrative.
