Description
This drypoint by California printmaker William Seltzer Rice was done around 1940. It was never officially "editioned" and exists in a few proofs only. It depicts fishing boats and an old dock at the edge of San Francisco Bay.
Sausalito is situated north of San Francisco, just across the Golden Gate Bridge on San Francisco Bay. It was a ferry terminus before the bridge and a shipbuilding, fishing community during the war. Now geared to tourists, in 1940 it was also was home to many artists, a number of whom lived on houseboats, who were attracted by easy access to San Francisco and the Art Institute, the view, and the reasonable cost of living.
