Description
Charlot's "Work and Rest" was done after his 1941 lithograph "Tortillera with Child" (Charlot 451; also illustrated color plate 10 after introduction). By the mid 1950s Charlot had developed an allergy to the materials used in lithography and began scaling back his involvment in the process. For this piece, he redrew the original print and restructured the composition to include a title and and oval "frame"; the drawing was then transferred to large zinc color plates using a blueprint solution at the studio of Lynton Kistler in Los Angeles. Charlot and Kistler oversaw the printing of approximately 300 impressions of this and other redrawn works on Linton's rotary offset press.
