Description
From the collaborative folio "21 Etchings and Poems" compiled by Peter Grippe, then-director of the New York branch of Atelier 17. Grippe started the project around 1950, sending a selection of written works by 21 poets from as Dylan Thomas, William Carlos Williams, Richard Wilbur, and others to 21 artists such as Willem de Kooning, Franz Kline, and Salvatore Grippi to choose from. The poets' handwritten work was tranferred directly to the plate of the corresponding artist. New York's Atelier 17 disbanded in 1954 but Grippe continued to work on the project with the artists in his own studio. In 1960 the project was finally completed and published by the Morris Gallery in New York.
