Description
In 1929 Eric Gill created a series of woodengravings for the book "Canticum Caticorum" ("Song of Solomon", the cycle of sacred motets by Giovanni Pierluigi), published by Cranach Press in 1931. This particular image, translated as "Behold thou art fair", number 8 in the cycle, was never published, perhaps due to its nudity. Eric Gill's block measured 5-3/4 x 2-3/4; this particular impression appears to be an enlarged reproduction, printed relief. When it was printed remains a mystery.
