Description

This graphite drawing, with white crayon highlights was of a detail of the 'Fountain of the Setting Sun' by sculptor A. A. Weinmann which stood with his 'Rising Sun' in the 'Court of the Universe' at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. This monotype was shown, together with the drawing, at the 1917 California Society of Etchers exhibition.

The drawing was the basis for a monotype that was exhibited in the 1997 National Museum of American Art exhibition "Singular Impressions, the Monotype in America". it is illustrated in black and white in the “Singular Impressions: The Monotype in America” catalogue by Joann Moser, Smithsonian Press, 1997; figure 104, page 105.

Moser comments on page 104: "The visibility of monotypes and the prizes awarded to them at the art exhibition of the Panama-Pacific Exposition encouraged many artists to explore this unusual new technique. Eric Spencer Mackey, who received widespread recognition for his murals and paintings in the exposition, made an accomplished color monotype of a sculptural fountain at the site, based on a very complete drawing of the subject."
