The calavera in the foreground is, in fact, a gunslinging cow shooting horned demon calavera in the form of a can of milk. Printed underneath the image, journalists, bankers, politicians, businesses and the "gringos" are condemned for using their positions to decieve the Mexican public and for sending adulterated milk to Mexico during an epidemic of foot-and-mouth disease.
"For the TGP, the calavera newspapers were one of the first categories of items they created for publication. These zesty publications were dynamic and topical. Members would assemble, presumably in mid-October, to review text contributions and sit down to expand words into images.
These communal events were among the most favored of all TGP collaborative efforts. In some cases, a dozen or more artists contributed, working a tight timeline but in a festive atmosphere (see page 9). Working with less artistic constraint and more personal enthusiasm, they must have enjoyed their deadly little tasks."
