Leona Pierce
1921 - 2002 (biography)This modernist, urban street scene depicts four children engrossed in a game of marbles, each intent on the "shot and the pot." Leona Pierce was known for her spirited color woodcuts of children at play. Evident in how she has layered textures, patterns, bold colors is the mark of her work as a textile artist.
An impression of "Marbles" was included in the New York Public Library's 2006 exhibition, "Prints With/Out Pressure: American Relief Prints from the 1940s to the 1960s."
A note on condition: seen in the lower left edge of the image is a repaired hole. It appears to have come about from the printing process, as the fibers of the delicate Japanese wove is stretched across, as if pulled by the baren or wooden spoon used to transfer the image from the block. Price reflects condition.
