Description
Verging between Abstract and Surreal, this detailed lithograph looks more like the world torn asunder than the beginning of a planet or a theological allegory. As such, the interpretation lies solely with the viewer, who is drawn in closer to the chaos to find meaning and familiarity. Yet the closer one looks the less certain one becomes. After all, the work is clearly executed with talent and with purpose, which might lead the viewer to expect a linear story.
Richard R. Black had mastered the techniques of fine art printmaking and taught these techniques at his alma Mater, Drake University in Iowa, for over 30 years. Despite the frenetic energy of the composition, there is a sense of beauteous, quiet and confident harmony.
