This rare engraving is one of Mauricio Lasanksy's signature early works, done in 1944 "Doma" while Lasansky was at Atelier 17 in New York, arriving there from Argentina in 1943. This was the artist's second print done at the Atelier. An impression was included in the exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art "Hayter and Studio 17" in 1944.
This impression is from the first edition of 35, Lasansky printed a second edition of 50 in 1974.
While in Argentina the young artist was influenced by Picasso and the surrealists, as evidenced in this powerful image that pays homage to Picasso's "Guernica".
“Doma” means the subduing of passions and the wild horse and human are interlocked in a Surrealist, mythic struggle for dominance.
