Description
This is a hand colored aquatint by James A. Merigot and was published by Merigot and Robert Edwards (1768-1827) in London in 1798 as a portfolio titled: "A SELECT COLLECTION OF VIEWS AND RUINS IN ROME AND ITS VICINITY; EXECUTED FROM DRAWINGS MADE UPON THE SPOT IN THE YEAR 1791" The portfolio consisted of 59 plates, printed on J. Whatman paper. Each image has a typeset title and the publication line, which in this case, reads: "London, Published Feb'y 1st 1793 by R. Edwards 142 New Bond Street & I. Merigot No 28 Haymarket." The Temple of Venus and Rome was the largest of the ancient Roman temples. Built between the Forum and the Colosseum it was dedicated to the goddess Venus. The temple was built between 121 and 135 AD and was the work of the architect Hadrian.
