Description
Marga Gil Roësset (1908-32). "Born in Madrid into an affluent family of artists and writers, Gil Roësset began drawing while still a small child and began sculpting as a teenager. She was a sensitive and talented young woman and became a close friend to her neighbors, the poet Juan Ramón Jiménez (1881-1958) and his wife, the writer and translator Zenobia Camprubí (1887-1956). Gil Roësset was also a close friend of another avant-garde woman, the poet Ernestina de Champourcin (1905-99), who was also a friend of Mallo’s. Gil Roësset’s astounding sculptural work was practically unknown in Spain until the late 1990s; at that time it was revealed that Gil Roësset had committed suicide in 1932 because she had fallen in love with the coquettish and megalomaniacal Juan Ramón, who did not take her passion seriously." (Shirley Mangini: "Maruja Mallo and the Spannish Avant-Garde," Ashgate publishing, 2010, ISBN: 9780754669326 )
Created when the artist was only 13, this etching was the frontispiece for the book "Rose des Bois" by her brother, Consuelo (published in 1923 by Plon, in France). Both Roesset children were prolific in the arts and linguistics. In her short life, Marga learned to draw, paint, and sculpt with a proficiency rarely seen in one so young. Very Rare
