Jose Guadalupe Posada
1852 - 1913 (biography)From an unidentified newspaper, this double sided insert has an image of Miguel Hidalgo on one side and a piece entitled "Vivan los Charros Mexicanos" and an eagle/snake/cacti vignette on the other. Signed by the artist in the Hidalgo portrait, the engraving was created to accompany a commemorative article regarding priest and revolutionary Hidlago's leadership in the 1810 Mexican War of Independence.
Posada is probably Mexico's important printmaker, creating over 800 images of a broad variety of subjects. An amazing accomplishment. Posada's best known works are his calaveras, which often assume various costumes, such as the Calavera de la Catrina, the "Skull of the Female Dandy", which was meant to satirize the life of the upper classes during the reign of Porfirio Díaz.
This sheet is printed on both sides with images by Posada. For more information on Posada please see our Biography above.
