Description
Lewis Suzuki was primarily known for his watercolors done in the California Style, or California School of Watercolor. These were saturated, loose-stroke images painted directly onto the sheet done without the traditional preparation used in classical watercolor painting. This especially allowed the artist to capture the rapidly changing light and shadow of the outdoors, whether in a landscape or a cityscape. Here, Suzuki depicts a rural hillside scene with sunset-gilded grasses swaying in a breeze. As with many of his landscapes, the sun features prominently, exuding a sultry warmth.
