This luminous impression is signed in ink by Charles Chaplin. The margins are unevenly trimmed outside the platemark, a la Whistler. Chaplin, whose father was English, grew up in France and was a portrait painter of note in the 19th century. He specialized in teaching painting to women, including Mary Cassatt. For more, see our biography on line. On the verso is a collector's stamp: "W. Otto Emerson / Palm Cottage / Hayward, California" W. (William) Otto Emerson was born in Illinois in 1856 and came west on a wagon train in 1870, arriving finally in San Francisco he trained as an artist with Virgil Williams and then to Paris at the Academie Julian with Bouguereau and Lefebvre. However, he is best known as an ornithologist and author. Emerson amassed a large collection of bird specimens and eggs. He was the first secretary / treasurer of the newly formed California Ornithological Club. Emerson died in Hayward in 1940.
